What Is My Show About?

I had a show last night in Berkeley and it went better than expected. I performed 90 percent new material and that is always so nerve wracking because I don’t know what I have until I have an audience. Stand-up comedians tend to have a notebook on stage when they try out new material, but I am no stand-up comedian, so I memorize everything and hope for the best. Besides, reading a script on stage really slows me down. I am a tactile person, and I need to use the space as much as possible.

So, what’s next, now that I wrote and performed “Part 4” of my one-woman show “All the Great New Things to Come”? It means I finally have to start putting all the material together that I have been working on for over a year and come up with a 55-minute show for fringe festivals.

What is my show about? I wish I had a clever elevator pitch, but I don’t, so here is a list of ideas of what my show is about:

  1. It’s about rediscovering my San Francisco Bay Area roots. I am a fourth generation Bay Area native. In 2020, during the shelter in place mandate, I started going through a family photo album my dad had given me years ago. Not only are there pictures, but there are letters written from my Great Grandmother who was born in 1893 in San Francisco. I have now become obsessed with my family tree.
  2. It’s about me being obsessed with genealogy and trying to fill in the gaps of my family tree and looking for the locations where my ancestors lived in San Francisco and Oakland. Some houses are still standing, but some were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake. Some were torn down when the freeways were built. I used to fall asleep in history class in high school because I didn’t understand what it had to do with me. Now I get it.
  3. It’s about me trying to prove that I am not a tourist just because I go to Union Square in SF during the holidays.

But I don’t know how to market this show. It’s so Bay specific. Will anyone care outside these walls?

Over the last month I have been posting on social media like crazy and trying to understand algorithms and advertising. I really don’t know what I am doing.

Turns out, my cat videos get more views than I do.

What’s a Gen Xer to do? I used to work in Casting back in the 90s, and actors back then were not expected to be camera operators or editors, just actors. Now we all have to be cinematographers and have perfect lighting, and my apartment has terrible lighting.

Alright, time for me to get back on Ancestry.com and here’s one more pic of what you really want:

Day 750 – Free Day

Today I woke up and I didn’t have to be anywhere, and it was glorious. Well, I did have to go by the house where I am feeding the cats, but other than that- it was a free day. My brain was like, “aaahhh, this is nice…”. It felt like the first day I could finally decompress since getting back from Fresno last month.

Well Fed Cat

I tried to fit Wolfie into a group photo, but he is too fluffy!

It wasn’t a completely lazy day, I did clean the bathroom. I also listened in on the San Francisco Fringe Festival Lottery results online. I did not get in – for like the 6th year in a row or something. I didn’t even make it on the waitlist this year. Two years ago, I was #5 on the waitlist – which is the last spot. I guess it’s just not meant to be. I will try again next year. At least I have some gigs already lined up.

Speaking of which, man, I really need to rehearse tomorrow!

Day 273 – Other People’s Felines

Tonight is my final night taking care of this girl:

Keesa the Cat

However, her sister, Faux Paw, isn’t as social and doesn’t pose for pictures.

As I type this, it’s pouring rain outside against the bedroom window. RAIN. We don’t get a lot of rain around these parts, hence the California wildfires. Unless you count that one time back in the Spring of 2011. It rained so much that year that I got used to it. And that never happens.

Also today I got a wreath for my apartment door. I hope no one steals it:

Merry Christmas!

Oh, and I went to the dentist today and it went a little something like this:

DENTAL ASSISTANT: This should only take a minute (jams retainer in my mouth)

ME: Owwww! (pulls retainer out of mouth)

DENTAL ASSISTANT: I’ll be right back.

That’s right. I got fitted for a retainer, but not like the kind we used to wear back in the day, but a very specific plastic retainer that is in the shape of my teeth. And I gotta tell you, it was a bit too snug at first. My teeth are even a little sore still. So the dental assistant stretched it out and then put it in warm water. That made it easier, but I am still a bit nervous about wearing it to bed every night. I am a big baby when it comes to pain.

Tomorrow I have to move out of this three level “house on the hill” and head back down to the flats. It will be good to be home for a few days, before I head out to my next cat-nanny gig. Hey, it wouldn’t be the holidays without me snuggling up to other people’s felines.

It just wouldn’t.

Day 264 – The Cat Nanny Diaries

Dear Diary,

It was fun watching Pearl the cat last week, and now tonight, I moved in with Keesa and Faux.

Keesa

Faux not pictured. She was having a bit of a ‘tude tonight.

Diary, Faux eats all the food, but she is still so skinny. I hope she’s not bulimic. Keesa is a more fussy eater, but look at those curves. More to love.

I haven’t watched these girls in quite awhile. The owner replaced the carpet with wood floors and now all I hear is the clickety clack of their paws claws as they wander through the house…..back and forth…..up and down the stairs….

In other news, Diary, look who was showing off tonight….

Day 258 – Catsgiving 2020

I had a pretty good day today. I got up, went on my morning walk, watched part of the Thanksgiving Day Parade, then visited this cutie:

Then I went over to my parents’ house for movies and turkey and more feline-lov’n:

Okay forget Thanksgiving, it was more like Catsgiving. I can’t help myself. I live in a rent controlled apartment that doesn’t allow pets-so I gotta get my feline fix in somehow!

I ate so much, and yet, as I type this, I WANT MORE TURKEY!! Why didn’t I bring home leftovers?
