Just last night I was sipping homemade hot chocolate in chilly SF that my friend Edward made, trying to stay warm, and now tonight I have two fans on blast trying to cool down my apartment in Oakland.
It was in the low 80s today, which means I don’t go home from work until after the sun has gone down because my place gets too warm. So I headed off to Treasure Island in search of geocaches.
It was a beautiful day to be outside and by the water. It wasn’t too windy, it was just right. However, I hadn’t been to Treasure Island in years and it felt bigger to me this time around. I actually got a little lost.
In the 1990s I used to come here to work on movies and television shows that would film inside the hangars. The movie Bicentennial Man and the TV show Nash Bridges come to mind. But it’s very different now- even the exit off the bridge is on the other side. The views are beautiful but there is only one grocery store for an island of about 2800 residents. There are a couple of coffee shops and restaurants but they weren’t open on a Monday evening.
It took me awhile to find the parking lot that lead to the walking trail. It was tucked away in a residential court of abandoned apartments.
Abandoned apartments with an amazing view. I am guessing this was housing for the Navy during WW2. Tons of rust everywhere and apparently there is a radioactive problem around these parts. I’m a sucker for abandoned buildings and ghost towns. I want to know about the people who used to live here.
I’m totally coming back.
